f (x) = -x^2 - 1 and g ( x) = x + 5

find f ( g (x) )

i know how to do these kind of problem, but i dk if you should put it negative first or square it first

if i do negative first i get x^2 + 10 + 24

but if i square it first i get -x^2 - 10 x - 26

which one is right???

  1. f(x) = -x² - 1

    g(x) = x + 5

    f(g(x)) = -{[g(x)]²} - 1

    f(g(x)) = -[(x + 5)²] - 1

    f(g(x)) = -(x² + 10x + 25) - 1

    f(g(x)) = -x² - 10x - 25 - 1

    f(g(x)) = -x² - 10x - 26

    ¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯

  2. -x^2 = -(x^2) ... but (-x)^2 = x^2

so u pick the first one

    -x^2 - 1 = -x^2 - 1 =  - (x^2 + 1)

in another way power operator comes before negative sign operator

    so the answer is

    f(g(x)) = - (x+5)^2 - 1

    = -x^2 -10x  -25 - 1

    = -x^2 - 10 x - 26
