AAA forecasted a 1% drop in holiday travel this past weekend due to rising gas prices, rising rental car rates, etc. If the prediction was correct, this will be the first time there has been a decrease in holiday travel since 2001.

WashingtonDC usually sees 13% of its population travel during Memorial Day weekend. If this year only 12% of the population is travelling, how many fewer of its 590,000 residents will be travelling this year than travelled last year? (The population in 2007 was 588,000.)

  1. But that is not what is meant by a 1% drop.

If 13% traveled last year, this year the drop would be 1% of 13%, meaning that 12.87% would travel.

  2. 13% of the total population (588,000) is 76440 people.

12% of the current population (590,000) is 70800 people.

    76440 - 70800 = 5640 fewer people.

  3. 5640
