  1. let frieda practices x hours in a week then

    carol practices 2x hours in a week and

    debbie practices x+3 hours in a week

    we know that they practices 23 hours in a week

    so

    x + 2x + (x+3)=23

    4x=20

    x=5hours

    frieda practices=5 hours

    carol practices=2x=10 hours

    debbie practices=x+3=8 hours

  2. Let F be the amout of time that Frieda practices.

    23 = 2F + F + (F+3)

    Above, I got 2F because Carol's time of practice is twice as much as Frieda's. Since F is how much time Frieda practices, and Debbie practices 3 hours more than Frieda, you can add 3 to F. Hence, (F+3)

    Then solve for F.

    23 = 4F+3

    subract 3 from each side

    20 = 4F

    divide each side by 4

    5 = F

    Frieda practices 4 hours per week.

    Carol practices twice as much so, 4 times 2 is 8.

    Carol practices 8 hours per week.

  3. Hi,

    2x + (x+3) + x = 23

    Just solve for x and you are done.

    good luck.

  4. In this problem since Frieda practices smallest number of hours, therefore,

    Let x be the number of hours that Freida practices.

    Therefore: 2x is the number of hour that Carol practices.

    and (x + 3) is for Debbie.

    From the given question we have:

    2x + (x + 3) + x =23, or

    4x + 3 = 23,

    4x + 3 - 3 = 23 - 3

    4x = 20

    x = 20/4 = 5 is for Frieda

    for Carol:  2x = 2(5) = 10hours practiced.

    and Debbie is (x + 3) = (5 + 3) = 8 hours practiced.

    Since the question asked only for Carol, then the answer is 10 hours that Carol practiced.

    Check:

      Carol + Debbie + Frieda

    = 10hrs +  8 hrs   + 5hrs = 23hrs.
