rent is due on the 10th.

i'm planning on moving out and my roommate is staying.

would i just divide 500 by 8?

  1. There are 31 days in the month of which you are staying 8.

You are staying approximately 25.8% of the month and the proportion of rent is $129.

    (8/31) * 500 = 129.03

  2. rent may be due on the 10th, but what days is that payment for? The previous month? the current month? the next month? from the 10th to the 10th?

You are assuming the last one, and if that is true, then you will be there for 8/31 of a month, so your payment would be 500*8/31 or $129.

But I suspect the rent payment is for a different period.

    .

  3. divide the five hundred by days in the month. 30 or 31. then take that (16.67) by 8 days you are staying = $133.36

  4. If the rent is from the 10th of the month to the 10th of the next month you will be there 8/30 of a month, so you should pay 8/30 of $500 = $133.33.

If the rent is due by the tenth in advance of the following month, your roomies owe you 12/30 because last month you paid for the whole of this month, which you are not using.

That's the mathematical answer.  The politics of leaving your roommate may dictate some other split.

  5. No...you are staying 8 days out of the month, so you would multiply $500 by 8/30.

    Roughly $133
