I did this math problem but I got crazy decimal answers and it just doesnt seem right to me. It is solving using elimination. So if someone could help me out with this, that would be awesome!

The question is:

4x-5y=7

6x-2y=-18

  1. Multiply the top equation by 3 and the bottom equation by 2

    12x - 15y = 21

    12x - 4y = -36

    Subtract the equations from each other (eliminating the 12x)

    0x - 11y = 57

    y = -57/11

    Plug this value for y back into the first equation...

    4x - 5(-57/11) = 7

    4x + 285/11 = 7

    4x = 7 - 285/11

    4x = 77/11 - 285/11

    4x = -208/11

    x = -52/11

    So, x = -52/11, y = -57/11

    Checking...

    4(-52/11) - 5(-57/11) =7

    -208/11 + 285/11 = 7

    77/11 = 7

    7 = 7  CHECK

    6(-52/11) - 2(-57/11) = -18

    -312/11 + 114/11 = -18

    -198/11 = -18

    -18 = -18 CHECK

    Sometimes, equations don't work out with integer results.  Trust yourself!

  2. Why don't you show us what you did ?  When I solved for x, I got -57/11 so maybe you're doing it right !!

  3. 6x+18=2y

    3x+9=y

    4x-5(3x+9)=7

    4x-15x-45=7

    -11x=52

    x=-4.7

    3(-4.7)+9=y

    -14.1+9=y

    -5.1=y

    hmmm im pretty sure thats right but it looks weird
