  1. Let us assume there were x wins and y ties.

    x=y+9

    2x+y=57

    2(y+9)+y=57

    2y+18+y=57

    3y+18=57

    3y=39

    y=13 (ties)

    x=y+9=22 (wins)

  2. Whenever you do a word problem, look at the last sentence first. It tells you your variables.

    "How many wins and how many ties."

    W: Wins

    T: Ties

    Now back to the problem.

    "Hockey team receives 2 points when they win and 1 point when they tie. "

    So the amount of points for winning is "2W" and the amount of points for tieing is "1T".

    "One season a team won a championship with with 57 points. "

    So they got 57 points.

    So 2W + 1T = 57.

    "They won 9 more games than they tied."

    Or, the amount of wins is the amount of ties plus 9.

    W = T + 9

    So now we have a system of two equations to solve.  Plug the one just above in for W in the first one.

    2(T+9) + 1T = 57

    I'll leave the rest to you!
