if a car is going 80mph,and the car in front of it is going 60.both speeds precise.if neither one decreases,and they are exactly 450 feet away from each other.how long will it take the one going 80mph to hit the one in front of it?

please also state how you got your answer.

  1. The net speed difference is 20 mph = 20 x 5280/3600 = 29.33 ft/sec.

    At 29.33 ft/sec, it will take 450/29.33 = 15.34 sec for the faster car to reach the one in front of it, that is the separation between them will be zero. That's close enough to a collision for me, although strictly speaking, the actual collision occurs instantly thereafter.  


  2. 80t = 60t + 450/5280

    solve for t, and t is in hour
