I know theres onlly one recognized type of pi according to schoolbooks (3.14), but I heard there were other types that used something different than .....3.1415929 , such as 4.2857142 ,

3.141

1.414

1.202

.91

2.718

1.618

.577

Is there a list somewhere for all the different types of pi? I heard there were so called mystical types of pi, something called space and time pi, and musical pi?

  1. There is humble pi. And apple pi.

None of the numbers you list is very close to the number named pi.

One of them is fairly close to the number called sqrt(2)

One of them is fairly close to the number (1+sqrt(5))/2.

One of them is fairly close to the number named e.

One of them is fairly close to the number 1/sqrt(3)

Those are all irrational numbers.  Maybe you would like a list of all irrational numbers.  Unfortunately that is impossible, since there are uncountably many (too many to put in a list).

Personally, I think humble pi is more important than any number, and more worthy of your consideration.

  2. It's not a question of different types of pi, there is only one pi. The only difference is how many decimal places it's written out to. E.g. it's 3.14 to 2 decimal places, but 3.14159 (slightly more accurate) to 5 decimal places. You can't write out the exact value of pi because the fractional part goes on for ever.

  3. You could try sacred Geometry. I know that the Egyptians started this idea. But they only posed the question of Calculus. But this is not your answer just a place to start finding your answer

  4. Pi is a constant. It defines the relationship between the radius (r) of a circle and it's area,(A).  A=pi x r squared.  If there are to be other constants they should be given different names. (I avoided mentioning apple pi too. It wasn't easy.)

  5. There is only one type of pi:

    3.14159 26535 89793 23846 26433 83279 50288 41971 69399 37510

  6. Pi is a mathematical constant -- the ratio of the circumference of a circle to its diameter. There is no other pi.

You are likely asking for other mathematical constants or their cousins fundamental constants. Pi is not a generic term for a constant.

Just google for "mathematical constant" and "fundamental constant" and you'll find a gazillion. Don't refer to any of them as a type of pi.

This question has appeared more than once in the last couple of days. Is there some bogus teacher out there assgning this c**p?

Oh -- and JB forgot the ever popuar Moon Pi.
