Mathew Belcher and Malcolm Page dominate 470 Men class at 2012 Rolex Miami OCR – Sailing news
A scintillating sailing performance from Mathew Belcher and Malcolm Page during the 2012 Rolex Miami Olympic Classes Regatta (OCR) brought them on top of the 470 Men class standings at the end of the contest. The pair sailed outstandingly in all scheduled
races and successfully made their way to the top podium place with 42 points after participating in 11 races, including a discard and medal race.
In the last two episodes of Miami OCR, the duo was able to clinch the silver medal but this year they made a strong run to claim the gold medal. For the first time in the history of the championship regatta, any Aussie pair has won the gold medal.
The final day of the competition saw some exciting races under ideal wind conditions. The weather was pleasant with up to a 20 knots breeze wafting over the race course. The 470 Men fleet raced in three races and was led by the Australian pair who grabbed
three bullets to win the title. Overall, Belcher and Page clicked five bullets to earn 42 points.
In their post regatta interview, the pair commented that they had a superb sailing experience throughout the event. They had a consistent run of form which helped them to surge on top of the final standings. This regatta will surely be a great help for them
to perform well at the Olympic Games.
With just a six-point difference, Sven and Kalle Coster finished on second position with 48 points. They could win only one race during the whole sailing event. Panagoitis Kampouridis and Efstathios Papadopoulos managed to cling on to the third podium spot
with 51 points after 11 races.
