Mathew Belcher and Malcolm Page excited to win third 470 World Championship title
Australian 470 team comprising of Mathew Belcher and Malcolm Page dominated the 470 fleet from the beginning with their outstanding performance in the Barcelona waters. The pair clinched their third 470 World Championship title after putting up an excellent
sailing display as they compiled 32 points.
The Aussie duo took part in 13 races, including a discard race and clinched eight bullets during their regatta campaign. The first couple of days were a Belcher-Page show as they took control over the fleet standing followed by Sime Fantela and Igor Marenic
of Croatia who finally hit the third spot.
Belcher and Page tumbled down in the standings when the regatta proceedings reached its middle. However, they bounced back brilliantly in the final races to retain their top position.
They crossed the finish line in the 20th position during the 11th race, which was their lowest finish in the championship, but fortunately that race was discarded from the overall scores as per the rules. The pair was quite excited
after adding third title in their career.
Speaking to the local media, Belcher said that they knew that they just had to get around the course so they had a very conservative start, probably sitting about two boat lengths back off the line. The winds were not helpful during the event but still they
maintained a handsome lead over the rest of the fleet.
Belcher added that they had a great week, to win any World Championship is special but to get three in a row is amazing and it is certainly something that they did not expect.
