Mathew Belcher and Malcolm Page hold on to overall lead of 2012 470 World Championship
Australia’s Mathew Belcher and Malcolm Page started the 2012 470 World Championship regatta with a lower finish on the opening day but they sprang back into the competition with some classy sailing and snatched the top spot of the standings.
So far, the Aussie sailors are leading the leader-board and are aiming to claim their third World Championship title. The Australian duo is getting closer to achieve their goal as they performed brilliantly on the fifth day of the regatta.
The fifth day of 470 World Championships 2012 began a little late because there was no breeze in the beginning which made the fleet wait for hours to fill in the racing area on the Barcelona waters.
The sailing was possible at 2pm when the winds started blowing on noticeable knots. The fleet launched their boats into the waters to complete the scheduled proceedings. Belcher and Page were able to claim the top spot again to retain their overall lead.
Speaking to the local media, Belcher said that they are sailing well but for them, the results are one thing and the performance another. However, they are synching very well together and their form coming into this event was very good, winning most of the
events this year.
He further added that leading the regatta is like recognition of their talent and hard work. Day 5 proceedings were a classic example where they fought their way back.
The last race was really rewarding, they rounded the first mark in 27th, but chipped away and fought hard and to come away with a fifth is probably one of their best performances.
