Mathias Frank secured the top position at the Giro Del Trentino stage 2 classifications
Mathias Frank of Team BMC opened his 2012 winning account with the stage 1 victory at the Giro del Trentino.
He was a strong part of the American team who finished at the top podium spot during the prologue, team’s time trial stage of the race.
The cyclist continued his winning momentum at the 152 kilometre stage 2 of the race and is now leading the stage 2 classifications.
He is dominating the category with a total time of 4 hours, 15 minutes and 23 seconds over Roman Kreuziger of Team Astana.
Carlos Alberto Betancur Gomez, Marco Pinotti and Damiano Cunego currently hold the third, fourth and fifth positions in the respective order.
Frank was delighted after gaining the top overall position at the race and is optimistic to extend his lead for the coming stages.
He briefed after crossing the finish line, "I knew only Roman Kreuziger couldn't win because he would was only 10 seconds down and could have taken the jersey with the bonus seconds".
"So for me, it was good to stay in the group and try my best in the sprint. I lost a few seconds but got the jersey. It's really exciting for sure".
"It was another positive showing after yesterday’s success in the TTT. Both Marco Pinotti and myself were up front, and we are really happy to have held on to the jersey. But tomorrow it’s going to be a very different business..."
Damiano Cunego of Team Lampre-ISD secured the top position during the second stage of the race with Carlos Alberto Betancur Gomez and Roman Kreuziger achieving the second and the third spots.
Eros Capecchi, Francesco Reda and Hubert Dupont finished at the fourth, fifth and sixth positions.
Mathias Frank finished almost 3 seconds behind the race leader and achieved the seventh position but his performance was good enough to earn him the overall lead at the race.
The Swiss is now eyeing the 167.8 kilometre stage 3 of the race to ensure his top position at general classifications.
His main threat is Roman Kreuziger, who is only 3 seconds behind at the 2nd position and Frank will leave no stones unturned to restrict the Team Astana cyclist in the coming stages.
