Mathieu Rodrigues upsets David Guez in first round – Orleans Challenger 2011
It was French Mathieu Rodrigues versus his own country mate, David Guez, in the first round of the Orleans Challenger Tournament, contested in France, on Tuesday October 18th. It was prime opportunity for the 28-year-old,
Guez, to level the head-to-head tally against his opponent but it was not the case. He felt short of ideas and was defeated in straight sets with a final score of 6-4 and 5-7 in an hour and thirty-eight minutes.
Rodrigues had lost just three matches out of his last ten whilst his opponent had won just three out of his last ten. 28-year-old was ranked at 167, 77 ranks higher than his opponents but his dismal form were pointing towards a
possible upset. 25-year-old, Rodrigues, was all fired up to take full advantage of his prolific form and ground his opponent to confirm his spot in the second round draws.
World No.240 started off the match with an exciting ace and continued his power play smashing two more aces across the court and forced his country mate on the back foot. He registered an impressive first serve success rate of
65% and followed it up with a respectful 50% second serve success rate; coupled these stats with two crucial breakpoints to steal the first set 6-4 and brighten his chances of pulling up an upset.
Total points were equally shared with 34 apiece but Rodrigues was clever enough to steal those critical points that helped him pocket the first set and hamper the progress of his opponent. A delightful come back was required by
Guez to push the match into the third set.
The aces changed hands in the second set and this time it was Guez who smashed three aces and broke his opponent’s serve twice but to his surprise his opponent had a backup plan to his onslaught; Rodrigues slowed the tempo of the
game and frustrated his opponent with his drop shots and guile. He forced some unforced errors from Guez who couldn’t stand up to this new format of the game and surrendered in the twelfth game of the set.
25-year-old broke his opponent’s serve thrice and registered a respectful 58% and 56%, first and second serve success rate to wrap it off in grand fashion. He won 41 points in total in the second set compared to 36 of his opponent.
Guez was classy with his first serve winning 65% points but was really disappointing with his second serve and lost 69% points on that. It was another disappointing performance from the 28-year-old, Guez, which will definitely
drop his ranking.
Victory for Rodrigues places him the berth in the second round draw where he will square-off against his French country mate Pierre-Hugues Herbert.
