Olympique de Marseille endured a woeful campaign last season that saw them finish on a lowly 10th place in the Ligue 1.
However, Valbuena has set his sights on helping L’OM regain their former heights and is eagerly looking forward to the start of the next season.
Les Phoceens failed to qualify for the Champions League for the first time in six seasons, and the 27-year-old has admitted that it’s disappointing not to be playing in the competition.
While talking to reporters, the former Libourne player stated that it’s weird not to be playing in Europe this season, but admitted that Marseille were poor last season and they got what they deserved.
However, Valbuena said that their main target is to finish in the podium position in the upcoming season and qualify for the Champions League to prove their doubters wrong.
"It is weird, not playing Champions League. But we've got what we deserved. Last season, we didn't do everything we could have done to finish in the top three. Now we need to look to the future and do all we can to prove that it was just an accident."
The talented midfielder said that last season is like bad memory and players have moved on from that. The Frenchman stated that Marseille have proved over the years that they can be a top team with a string of excellent performances in the Champions League.
"We've already proved that we can mix it with the best in the Champions League; we reached the quarter-finals, after all.”
http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Mathieu-Valbuena-c24690 said that everyone in the squad knows that they have to step up their game if they want to improve from the last season.
“But when, you finish tenth in the league, you know something isn't right. We need to rediscover the team spirit that brought us back from the brink last autumn."
