Mathilde Johansson upsets Petra Cetkovska in the second round – French Open 2012
World number 93, Mathilde Johansson, impresses again in the second round of the Roland Garros French Open with a victory over the 26th ranked Czech, Petra Cetkovska, who has been struggling with her form in the recent
times. She registered straight sets win 7-6(1), 6-2.
Johansson have some impressive history against the Czech. She defeated her earlier this year in the Grand Prix De Sar. Before that she had defeated her in 2011 as well in the final of the Petage tournament. Just a one loss in 2010
were followed up with three consecutive triumphs clearly states her authoritative control over the Czech’s play.
She started in a negative manner; lost the opening serve game and was drilled down to a trail of 1-4 courtesy another breakpoint for Cetkovska. It seemed like the Czech will level the head-to-head scores this time around but a
sudden outbreak from the French starlet turned the tables on her.
Johansson won a breakthrough in the sixth game and kept the set alive in a ‘do or die’ situation by breaking serve and levelling the scores. Serve holds at both ends enforced a tie-breaker round into play and with no pressure at
all the local competitor powered down the visitor to take lead of one set.
The crowd was left dejected by the loss of the French number one, Marion Bartoli, so they turned their attention towards the inform Johansson. The French took an early lead in the second set; breaking serve upfront and extending
the lead to three games with another breakthrough. A swap of breakpoints kept her lead intact and she held her serve to 40:15 in the final game that confirmed her win.
In a post-match interview, the French stated, “When you try 100% every day and nothing happens, you start thinking, 'Is this worthwhile?' But when you have a good practice session, when you can play a portion of a match that's
really good, you start thinking maybe you're getting there. And I proved that right today. It was always there. It was just waiting to come into the light.”
Mathilde Johansson is a surprise entry in the third round where she will go head-to-head with the American starlet, Sloane Stephens.
