I have two double sided cards and using both cards I can make these values: 7, 10, - 1, - 4. What integers are on each side of the two cards? Please explain how you worked out your answer. Thank you!

  1. i dont get it..

  2. This is no way possible. The outcome must be 7, 10, -1, -2.

  3. One one card, you have:

4 on one side and 3 on the other. Hence 4+3=7 and 3-4=-1.

On the other card, you have:

7 on one side and 3 on the other. Hence 7+3=10 and 3-7=-4.

You need a even-odd pair on one double sided card, because it is only by adding or subtracting these pairs, you will obtain an odd number, never otherwise.

  4. I hope I could explain:) you have two cards with numbers on double sides. so you have 4 numbers.

    lets say they are a,b,c,d.

also assume that a and b; c and d are on the same cards.

then we have to make another assumption, but we will adjust this assumption later, for now lets think that we have the results like these:

    (1) a+c = 7

    (2) a+d = 10

    (3) b+c = -1

    (4) b+d = - 4

when we add these 4 equations, we will get:

    2a+2b+2c+2d=12 so;

    (5) a+b+c+d =6

when we subtract equation (1) from equation (5) we get:

b+d= -1 which contradicts with eq (4). So we adjust the numbers like these:

    (1) a+c = 7

    (2) a+d = 10

    (3) b+c = -4

    (4) b+d = -1

after then it is up to you, there are infinite solutions. (to understand why, check the cramer's rule)

    If you accept a = 7 then c=0, d=3 and b= -4, if you accept a = 5 then c = 2, d=5 and b=-6, etc.

  5. i dont know myself, but if i copy and paste your question, i can put it on yahoo answers and maybe someone else will work it out for me. If that happens, i'll let you know

  6. 4 and 3. is one of them, i think.

    4 + 3 = 7.

    3 - 4 = - 4.

    and 1 and 2.

    1 - (2+3) = - 4.

    4 + 3 + 2 + 1 = 10.

    hope that is helpful!

  7. no clue sorry
