There were 3 ladies that went to a hotel. They each paid $30 for a room and gave it to the receptionist. Then the receptionist notices that the room cost $25. The receptionist couldnt share $5 between 3 people so he put 2 dollars in his pocket and gave each lady one dollar.

Therefore each lady paid $9 and there was 3 ladies so they all paid $27 and there was 2 dollars in the receptionist's pocket. So it adds up to $29. What happened to the other dollar?

  1. the $25 cost of the room is not exactly divisible by 3, if each lady paid $8 then they should had paid only $24......

    but since $25 was paid, the missing 1 dollar went there....


  2. I had heard this and I couldn't think of the answer - I had to wait for it. Now I couldn't remember it but now I think I can. It is just a mistake in the last sum. the ladies in total paid $27, $25 for the room and the $2 that the receptionist took. the remaining $3 were those returned to them.

    The math isn’t wrong here, the instructions are wrong. Think of the problem this way:

    At the end of the day, each man has put in $9 towards the cost of the room: 3 x $9 = $27.

    The bellboy has kept $2 from what the men spent for himself: $27 - $2 = $25.

    The motel has collected $25.

    Or to take it from the other direction:

    The motel has $30 and gives $5 of that to the bellboy to return to the men: $30 - $5 = $25.

    The bellboy, not knowing how to split $5 equally decides to keep $2 for himself: $5 - $2 = $3.

    The men each end up with $1 each. Total it up: 3 x $1 + $2 + $25 = $30.

    About the best the bellhop could have done would be to give two men $1.67 and the last $1.66, which would be about as close to evenly dividing $5 he could have come to. The mistake in the instructions is when the riddle asks you to “add the $2 the bellboy kept” to the total the men spent. The bellboy took that money from the total so you would subtract it, not add it. Now, how many of you are slapping your foreheads right about now?

    The facts in this riddle are clear: There is an initial $30 charge. It should have been $25, so $5 must be returned and accounted for. $3 is given to the 3 friends, $2 is kept by the bellhop - there you have the $5. The trick to this riddle is that the addition and subtraction are done at the wrong times to misdirect your thinking - and quite successfully for most. Each of the 3 friends did indeed pay $9, not $10, and as far as the friends are concerned, they paid $27 for the night. But we know that the clerk will tell us that they were charged only $25 and when you add the $3 returned with the $2 kept by the bellhop, you come up with $30.

    thats $30. you are adding the wrong values.  each lady paid $9 the receptionist STOLE 2 dollars  27-2 = 25 in the till.

    if you want to add it up properly its. 10 + 10 + 10 -2-1-1-1=25
