Question:

Maths teacher or estate agent?

I've just finished college and have applied for a maths course at uni to become a maths teacher. I've tried a bit of teaching and it was ok but I can imagine that the job would be better when in it rather than just trying it out. Thing is though, I've always been interested in housing and estate agency. There are more jobs going for maths teachers and they probably earn more quicker. I've not got a big big interest in maths, it's just one of the subjects that I was good at through school and college. What do you think? Maths teacher or estate agent? Pros and cons?

  1. To be a maths teacher you got to be a m*******t, and you'll be a m*******t among masochists - no fun. Only the best ones get the Principal's attention. Put that up against Real Estate. Reminds me of trying to decide which of two women I should marry. The correct answer was: neither, tho I didnt discover that until years later. Don't find yourself in the same fix; do something you love. You'll never regret it.

  2. Ask yourself several questions:

For one, is having a good salary important to you? If yes, scrap the teacher idea. Generally, teachers do not get the salary they deserve.

Another thing, beyond being good at Math, are you passionate about teaching? Teachers do a lot of tasks beyond than what they are being paid for.

You've already said that you're interested in housing and estate agency so I can't see why you won't choose it. If you're curious or have some bit of liking for Math, why not study to be a part-time college instructor?

This is just my opinion so of course, you really have to think this thoroughly, based on your own personal preferences.

  3. If the thought of disruptive students is the problem, get a job in a college or sixth form establishment. The students there are usually a bit better motivated and behaved.

Why let a good maths degree go to waste as an estate agent.

Why not try other maths related subjects like accountancy?

Have a word with your "Connexions" officer to sort out possible careers in maths?
