Matias Del Solar retains lead of Standard Apprentice Division: 2012 Laser World Masters Championship
Chile’s Matias Del Solar continued his impressive sailing on the second day of the 2012 Laser World Masters Championship and retained his lead over the Standard Apprentice Division fleet with five points after six races, including a discard race. The Chilean
sailor did not lose his focus during the second day proceedings of the regatta and proved his class once again collecting two more bullets.
Unlike Day 1, the water was not troubling at all as the winds were quite moderate and supportive to commence the second day proceedings at the Moreton Bay in Brisbane, Queensland. The second day of the 2012 Laser World Masters Championship began under shining
sun with winds blowing up to 15 knots that welcomed the fleet with open arms.
Before the start of Day 2 schedule, the sailors enjoyed Red Snakes, an energy food that crews of Sydney Hobart Race use, on the Northern course after they left the empty water bottles on the Royal Queensland Yacht Squadron. The sailors were quite excited
to start the second day sailing because as the regatta moves towards its end, the results will become clearer.
The 2012 London Olympic representative for Chile, Matias Del Solar launched his boat into the Australian waters with great deal of determination and confidence which he got after grabbing the overall lead on Day 1. Solar will be representing his country
for the third time after 2004 Athens Olympics and 2008 Beijing.
His first day was full of thrill especially when he raced right after a thunderstorm visited the racing area. He continued to dominate the fleet with another back-to-back bullet finish. He earned four points after clinching four bullets on the first day.
On Day 2, he clinched two more hits to lead the Laser Standard Apprentice Division.
Speaking to the local media at the end of Day 2, De Solar said, “I had good starts and good speed - I just need to keep doing that. And I enjoyed the red snakes. I’ve sailed at RQ twice before at Sail Brisbane and always red snakes.”
De Solar performed brilliantly and did not show any signs of trouble or confusion. Australia’s Tony Baisden finished on the second podium place with 12 points while Brett Morris is on third spot with 13 points.
