The Die Knappen defender is confident that his side can compete with the likes of Borussia Dortmund and Bayern Munich for the Bundesliga title.
Schalke were impressive in the previous campaign as they ended in third place behind the likes of Borussia Dortmund and Bayern Munich, thus qualifying for the UEFA Champions League.

one or two signings are expected before the season starts next month.
Joel Matip claims that the team wants to better their third place finish last term and is looking to fight for the honours in the upcoming campaign. The player is confident that the side is improving with every season going by
and expects a better result at the end of next season.
The midfielder also stressed on the importance of a good start to the season. He stated that a winning start always helps with the confidence of the players and reduces the pressure on the team for the future games.
“It's very difficult to make any predictions, but we obviously want to do well in all three competitions. Because you finished last season in third place, you can't say that fourth place will do in the new campaign. We'll have
to wait and see how we start, but it's important to start the season on a high,” he was quoted as saying in an interview.
On the other hand, the Cameroonian international sticked with Borussia Dortmund as the title favourites and expects Bayern Munich to provide a tough fight for them after their summer spending spree.
“Dortmund and Bayern are the favourites to win the title. There's no denying that BVB have done some great things in recent years,” he concluded.
Joel Matip has made 76 league appearances for Schalke and has scored six times in the process. The player also has five international caps to his name, but is yet to score for his country.
