Mator basics 250 gb portable hard drive 64 bit... I bought the maxtor basics portable to back up

I bought the maxtor basics portable to back up my old 64 bit vista ultimate laptop before I took it to get replaced. Now I can restoreand retrieve all my documents from the backup, just not my email! Error when i try to open the .pst file in outlook 2007 is " not a personal folders file!!! I have tried everything, help - I cannot get the data back off of my old laptop because it is gone!!!P.S. my new laptop has vista ultimate 64 bit and office 2007 also.
