The Borussia Dortmund defender has vowed to fight for his place in the starting line-up as the squad prepares for the European championship next month.
Joachim Low has named a provisional 27-man squad for the European championship to be held in http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Ukraine-c3032 next month. The final squad will be named on May 29 in which four players will face the axe.
The German squad has a host of world-class players and there is intense competition for places. Although the names in the midfield and attack for the starting role may be well defined, there are still doubts whether which player
will start in the centre of defence.
The likes of Holger Badstuber, http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Mats-Hummels-c24767 and Benedikt Howedes will fight for two places in the heart of defence. Badstuber’s brilliant showings this season for Bayern Munich may earn him one of the two spots
but the other is still up for grabs.
Hummels insisted that Badstuber is confirmed for one of the places in the central defence. The Dortmund man stressed that he and Mertesacker will fight for the other place when the starting line-up will be announced for the first
game against http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Portugal-c2984. However, he added that it will be Joachim Low’s decision in the end to decide which player will start.
“It looks as though Holger Badstuber's place is set. And it seems Mertesacker and I will fight for the place next to him. That's my impression. We know that there will eventually be a decision from the coach. And everyone will
be have to live with it,” he was quoted as saying in an interview.
On the other hand, the defender admitted that it is difficult for a player to cope with the role of being a backup player. He admitted that the feeling of winning is just not there unless you take part in the game itself.
“Even though I am confident, the role of a backup is a rather difficult one. I'm being completely honest. If you sit on the bench and the others win, then you will not really feel like part of the winning team,” he concluded.
Mats Hummels has 13 international caps to his name and is yet to score for his country.
