Matson Lawson prevails in Men 200m backstroke semi-final – EnergyAustralia Swimming Championships
Matson Lawson of Tigersharks dominated the Men’s 200m backstroke semi-final on fifth day of the continued 2012 EnergyAustralia Swimming Championships at the South Australia Aquatic and Leisure Centre in Adelaide on Monday, March 19.
The Australian nationals serve as a selection trial for the Australian team, which will compete at the 2012 London Olympic Games.
The 19-year-old Lawson, who reached the semi-final as top fastest swimmer, met expectations of his supporters by sustaining his position. He improved his timing by almost one second and clocked 1 minute and 58.53 seconds for first position.
His invincible struggle remained 0.50 seconds ahead of his team-member, Joshua Beaver, who also elevated his efforts and claimed second best spot of the event by producing a time of 1 minute and 59.03 seconds.
The 19-year-old Beaver remained 0.17 seconds ahead of his subsequent rival, Ashley Delaney of Nunawading, who ended his swim in third place by touching the wall with the timing of 1 minute and 59.20 seconds.
The fourth fastest spot of the race was secured by Mitch Larkin of St Peters Western Swim Club, who was just one stroke slower from his preceding swimmer and clocked a time of 1 minute and 59.33 seconds.
Moments later, the audience witnessed gruelling efforts of SOPAC’s Jayden Hadler in the semi-final of Men’s 200m Individual Medley (IM). The 18-year-old Hadler remained in a lead of just one stroke from his following swimmer and clocked a time of 1 minute
and 59.69 seconds.
His effort remained 0.19 seconds ahead of his teammate, Daniel Tranter, who proved his mettle for the second best spot by posting a time of 1 minute and 59.88 seconds.
He was chased by Thomas Fraser-Holmes of Miami, who remained only 0.24 seconds slower from his preceding finisher and posted a time of 2 minutes and 00.12 seconds to enter the playoff as third best finisher. Trinity Grammar’s Kenneth To surfaced on the finishing
end for fourth position as he clocked 2 minutes and 00.87 seconds.
The session admired ruthless efforts of all participants in their respective swims while the competition will complete on March 22.
