Matt Abood secures Men’s 50m freestyle gold – US Open Swimming Championships
Matt Abood of Australia secured gold medal of the Men’s 50m freestyle on day five of the 2012 US Open Swimming Championships at Indiana University Natatorium in Indianapolis on Saturday, August 11.
The 26-year-old Matt Abood served notice of his talent in the shortest freestyle event as he showed his urgency towards the finishing wall for first position.
His stupendous effort placed him a stroke ahead of his strongest rival as he transpired on the finishing blockade for gold medal with a timing of 22.20 seconds.
The champion was chased by his compatriot, Andrew Abood, who stayed 0.19 seconds slower from him over the finishing end and accomplished silver medal of the race by producing an effort of 22.39 seconds.
The second position holder was followed by Nick Brunelli of SwimMAC Carolina, who suffered a loss of 0.09 seconds from his foregoing finisher but seized bronze medal of the race by submitting an effort of 22.48 seconds.
Similarly, Brunelli was followed by Adam Small of University of Arizona, who was only 0.11 seconds away from overpowering his preceding swimmer as he finished fourth by clocking a time of 22.59 seconds.
The 22-year-old Small was trailed by Derek Toomey of Minnesota Aquatics, who suffered a deficit of 0.16 seconds from his preceding swimmer and posted a time of 22.75 seconds for fifth position.
Sixth fastest spot of the discipline was secured by Jason Schnur of Ohio State Swim, who remained only 0.07 seconds behind and surfaced on the wall with an effort of 22.82 seconds.
Schnur was trailed by Nielsen Varoy of New Zealand, who remained only 0.02 seconds slower from improving his position and occupied seventh fastest spot of the event by posting a time of 22.84 seconds.
Subsequently, Mehdy Metella of France failed to give tough time to any of his opponents as he stayed 0.27 seconds slower from his former finisher and ended eighth in the event by producing a time of 23.21 seconds.
Abood was pleased with his gold finish in the 50m event and aroused expectations of his followers by saying that he would try to continue the same in future.
