Matt Angle shines as the Baltimore Orioles defeat Detroit Tigers 6-5 – MLB Update
Matt Angle hit the tiebreaking run on Saturday, September 24 to help the Baltimore Orioles beat the Detroit Tigers 6-5 at Comerica Park.
The loss was a heavy blow not only to the Tigers but also to Justin Verlander who could not continue his winning streak.
Verlander, who had to his credit 12 consecutive winnings starts, would have become the only starter in seven decades to win 13 wins in a row. The last time any starter achieved this milestone was Ellis Kinder of the Boston Red Sox in 1949.
Also, the record of winning the most start sits with Philadelphia Athletics’ Lefty Grove who had won 21 consecutive starts in 1931. Verlander had also broken the Tigers’ record of winning 11 consecutive starts. Previously it was Earl Whitehill and Hal Newhouser
who had set this distinction in 1930 and 1946 respectively.
Matt Angle, who scored the winning run, also scored the first run for the Baltimore Orioles in the very first inning with his homer to right. Verlander gave up two hits in the inning. As Jeremy Guthrie pitched a shut-out first inning, Verlander was unable
to stop the Orioles’ hitters.
J. J. Hardy scored a two-run single while Nick Markakis singled to right to take up the score to 4-0. Mark Reynolds homered in the third to make it 5-0 for the Orioles. Austin Jackson was first to score for the Tigers in the bottom of the third inning.
Alex Avila and Jhonny Peralta scored a single each in the fourth to bring the lead down to 5-3 while Miguel Cabrera homered in the sixth to keep the Tigers closer to the Orioles with a 5-4 lead. It was in the eighth that Jhonny Peralta singled to left to
level the score for the first time in the game.
However, Matt Angle hit a tiebreaking run in the top of the ninth against Daniel Schlereth to make it 6-5 for the Orioles. Kevin Gregg pitched a shut-out ninth to conclude the game with an impressive 6-5 victory against the Detroit Tigers.
