Matt Barnes' fiancée disputes domestic abuse charges
Los Angeles Lakers foward Matt Barnes was arrested on Wednesday, September 8. He booked for felony, domestic violence charges and for obstructing the use of a telephone line.
Gloria Govan, the fiancée of Barnes, said stated that the charges of domestic abuse are false. Govan stated, “…any accusation of domestic violence is false. My fiancé, Matt Barnes has never physically abused me or my family.”

The charges stem from an incomplete 911 call that originated from the Barnes home. The call was cut short and per procedure, deputies were dispatched to the home. Once they arrived, they noted that both individuals at the home had visible injuries. The deputies decided that Barnes had been the aggressor and he was taken into custody. Barnes was released after posting $50,000 bail. He is due back in court on Monday for the arraignment.
After his release, Barnes posted on his Twitter account, “Don’t let your ears witness, what your eyes didn’t see.” He also responded to a question from newscaster Bryan May with the following text message, “U know any domestic violence situation 9 outa 10 times the man gets arrested. That’s the case here, I was the victim but still got arrested.”
California law requires authorities to arrest a suspected offender when they find probable cause in a situation where they believe domestic violence has occurred. Due to this law, law enforcement officers usually arrest a suspect even when the alleged victim disputes the charges or asks that an arrest not be made. Sheriff’s Department policy states that any visible sign of injury or complaint of pain is sufficient probable cause for a felony arrest in a domestic violence case.  State penal code encourages law enforcement officers to arrest the individual they view as the primary aggressor.
Barnes and Govan have two children, twin boys Carter and Isaiah who will turn two in early November.  Barnes and Govan recently postponed their wedding, which was originally planned for August 21. Govan is a cast member on the VH1 reality show, “Basketball Wives.”
