Matt Bettencourt finds his form at the True South Classic
Matt Bettencourt shot a second straight 6-under 66 to take the share of the second place midway through the second round of the True South Classic, prior to the bad light conditions that resulted in the suspension of the play on Friday.
Bettencourt carried his Thursday’s form into Friday by registering seven birdies and an eagle against three bogeys in ideal conditions to climb to 12-under, a shot clear of Billy Horschel (63).
“I drove the ball really well today, which is important playing with clean and play,” he said. “Hit a bunch of fairways. Just a long day. We played 28 holes today. So had to make sure I stayed hydrated. But I made a lot of putts, couple of three-putts, but
other than that, it was just a good ball striking day for me too”.
It was really an amazing performance considering the fact that he only made the cut once in the last 11 events that he has played on the PGA Tour.
Moreover, he participated in 23 PGA Tour events so far during the 2012 golf season and made the cut only six times.
Therefore, he totally stunned his opponents with such a strong comeback on the tour. However, he still has to prove his return with a consistent display of the game in the remaining two rounds.
According to him, the key to success in Mississippi will be to remain hydrated throughout the time, during which a player stays on the course, because of the heat factor.
“I think the key is you've got to stay hydrated, got to stay focused. That's the most important thing, at least for me anyway. I like the layout. It's a good golf course,” he said. “...Looking forward to a very enjoyable weekend here”.
According to the golf commentators, he could have done even better if he did not have miscued his tee shots a couple of times during the round.
In the meantime, the overnight leader Jason Bohn also joined him on the leaderboard. However, he still has to complete his round, the final nine holes, which he will do early Saturday morning.
