Matt Brammeier signs with HTC-Columbia
Irish national champion Matt Brammeier has unexpectedly caught the attention of HTC-Columbia.
The American-based team has the most pro victories of any team this year and is set to hold on to its reputation as the leading sprinter’s team, with Mark Cavendish’s lead-out train being heavily strengthened with a number of new riders.
“I am thrilled to be joining HTC-Columbia in 2011,” said Brammeier. “It's the best team in the world and it's a huge honour that they have put their faith in my abilities as a rider. I like to work hard and ride hard and I'm excited that I will be able to
improve and learn from the very best.”
The 25-year-old Liverpool native has signed a one-year contract with Cavendish’s team, a major upgrade from the Irish An Post Grant Thornton M. Donnelly Sean Kelly team.
He won the national championships ahead of top ProTour riders Nicolas Roche and Daniel Martin, and was awarded Most Aggressive Rider in the final stage of the Tour of Britain.
“It's been a long and tough road back from the injuries that almost ended my career two years ago, but it's all been worthwhile,” said Brammeier. “It's a dream come true to be given such a fabulous opportunity with HTC-Columbia."
Team manager Rolf Aldag explained that it was the spirit Brammeier showed in his recovery and the aggressive riding style he has settled into, despite those injuries, that have won their faith in him.
“Matt has shown tremendous character coming back so strong after his very bad accident two years ago, being run over by a truck and then winning the Irish National Road Title this year,” said Aldag. “He is a real fighter with a lot of talent, good tactical
skills from his track experience, and the right spirit.”
