Matt Cain helps San Francisco Giants defeat Colorado Rockies 3-1 - MLB Update
The defending World Series champions’ starter Matt Cain threw outstanding pitches in the club’s 3-1 win over the Colorado Rockies, in the first outing of the three-game series at AT&T Park, San Francisco on Friday, June 3.
The 26-year-old right-hand hurler, making his twelfth start of the season, held the opposition to no-score until the fourth inning when he allowed an RBI single to Todd Helton. After allowing this single he struck back again in a great fashion and complete
his seven innings spell, allowing just four hits and four walks while struck-out seven batters to earn his fourth win of the season.
"I thought he got better as he went," Giants manager Bruce Bochy said. "He made a couple of mistakes to the pitcher but overall that's a great effort by Matty, which we needed. He just stayed away from making too many mistakes and that's a key for Matt."
Cain received full support from reliever Javier Lopez and closer Brian Wilson. The 33-year-old pitcher struck-out two batters without scattering any hit over one inning to hold his eighth game of the season. Wilson threw a perfect inning, taking one batter
while allowed one walk and one hit in last inning to save his 16th game in 2011.
After Todd Helton achieved a lead in the top of the fourth inning, the Giants’ Cody Ross tied the game with an RBI double off the Rockies’ starter Juan Nicasio in the bottom of the inning. Then Brandon Crawford drove in to the deep right to achieve a leading
run, which remained there until the Giants started celebrating after the ninth inning.
Before and after this inning, Nicasio was impressive, however he has given nine innings but he did not allow any run over six innings. The 24-year-old pitcher, who won his debut game on May 28 against the St. Louis Cardinals, was considered unflappable in
the Major League before losing his first game.
"The kid has to pay for two hanging sliders, both with two outs," Colorado manager Jim Tracy said of Nicasio. "He did an excellent job. Our trouble, once again, came from the lack of offence."
In his first game last week, he made two strike-outs and allowed just one run on six hits over seven innings spell to make his name in the list of players who has started their Major League Baseball career with a win.
The Rockies’ reliever Matt Belisle and closer Mark Reynolds threw scoreless one innings each, but could not bring the game back into their side.
