Matt Cain helps San Francisco Giants thrash San Diego Padres 8-3 – MLB Update
San Francisco Giants continued their impressive as they thrashed San Diego Padres 8-3 at Petco Park in San Diego, California on Thursday, June 7 in the finale of their three match series of the 2012 Major League Baseball regular season.
Buster Posey had an RBI single to centre in the first inning to put the Giants 1-0 ahead. Ryan Theriot and Brandon Belt made the most of available opportunities in the first and the second to extend San Francisco’s lead to 3-0.
With the Giants leading the score 4-3, Angel Pagan hit a two run home-run to right and then Gregor Blanco homered in the same direction to deny the Padres any chance coming back into the contest.
"I think it went pretty well," Jason Marquis said. "I made a few mistakes and I paid for them. For the most part, I felt good and settled in and got into a rhythm."
"I feel like I had some situations to make better pitches and I didn't," Cain said of the sixth. "I had some chances and I was ahead in the count and I didn't make pitches and I got myself into some trouble, so that kind of started it a little bit."
"We had a shot there to turn the tables, and we didn't," Padres’ manager Bud Black said.
Matt Cain produced a match winning performance for his side. Handling the pressure absolutely brilliantly, he pitched the Giants out of trouble on a number of occasions to continue his winning streak. Despite all the errors committed by his team mates and
the bases loaded situation with no outs, Cain did not show any signs of nerves.
Striking-out nine in seven innings, he secured his seventh win of the season. Giants’ offence also produced a masterful effort with home runs coming from Posey, Pagan and Blanco.
The Giants lost in a nail biting encounter in the opening game but they came back strongly in the following game to keep the series alive. It will be interesting to see if they can continue their remarkable form in their next series against American League
West leaders Texas Rangers.
