Matt Cain’s dominant pitching helped San Francisco Giants rout Arizona Diamondbacks, 3-2: MLB Update
San Francisco Giants’ starter, Matt Cain, was outstanding with the ball as he pitched 7 2/3 solid innings and struck out seven batters in the Giants’ 3-2 victory over the Arizona Diamondbacks at the AT&T Park in San Francisco on May 12.
Cain permitted two runs on seven hits including two earned runs and gave away just one walk. He said of the game, “Those are the ones where you really don't have a whole lot of options to get out of the way. The bat and my hand probably saved my face. That's
definitely the homestand we needed. I got those guys in a little bit of a pickle in the eighth and the bullpen really didn't worry about it.”
The first inning went scoreless for both teams. Nate Schierholtz played a crucial part for his team as he went 3-for-4 and hit an RBI single off the right field to give the Giants a 1-0 lead. Schierholtz was grounded out in the third inning on the loaded
bases and did not post another run for the Giants.
The pitchers from both sides raised the momentum of their roster by giving no run to any batter from third to sixth inning. The Giants led off with 3-2 in the seventh inning when Andres Torres hit a shot for a double but scored a single run to reach at the
second base and Aubrey Huff took an RBI single off the left-centre field. The Diamondbacks’ batters had not a good day with bat as they did not add any run till seventh inning.
During eighth inning, the Diamondbacks posted two scores by adding back-to-back singles in their score-card to cut-off their shortfall to 3-2. Justin Upton hit an RBI single against the Giants’ reliever Ramon Ramirez while Eli Whiteside moved from second
to third base to complete a single run. The ninth inning passed away without score.
The Diamondbacks’ Manager Kirk Gibson was disappointed with the way his team performed right through the game. Speaking to reporters, he said, “I feel like we got outplayed this series, I got outmanaged and they swept us. Those guys are the world champions
and they showed it this series. We've got to just pick ourselves up.”
Daniel Hudson also pitched well but his performance was not enough to steal a win for his team. He permitted three runs on seven hits with three earned runs in 6 2/3 inning pitches. Hudson gave away three walks and had five strike-outs.
