Matt Dobyns gains the lead at the PGA Professional National Championship
Matt Dobyns carded a three-under par 69 in the third round of the PGA Professional National Championship at the Bayonet & Black Horse Golf Club, Seaside, California, to retain the lead on Tuesday, June 26, 2012.
Dobyns did not enjoy a good start to his round and recorded a bogey along with eight par putts on the front nine of the course.
The back nine witnessed him do something amazing and he managed to score a stunning hole in one on the par-three 14th hole.
In addition to that, he ended the round with a bunker shot that found the cup in the end for an eagle.
Therefore, he managed to take a six-stroke lead over the opening-round leader, Mike Small, who carded an even par 72. Dobyns now has an overall score of 11-under par 205.
“I didn’t have any goals coming here; I didn’t have time,” said Dobyns, whose most recent victory came in the 2011 Long Island Open.
“I wasn’t sure I was going to come until the day before. The Ladies Member-Guest event today is a big event for me since I’ve been employed. I have never been in front before – not this far in front – and not in front of this many good players”.
After the round completed, Dobyns looked really happy because of the huge lead that he had while entering the final round of his debut appearance in the championship.
In the meantime, Small, who three-putted twice on Tuesday, also praised Dobyns’ performance and said that he played great throughout the opening three rounds.
He also stated that the latter deserves the score that he had on the leaderboard.
“I know I have to hit the ball better. Matt’s going to have to help us out a little bit, but he sure is playing well right now,” said Small, who recorded seven top-10 finishes in his last eight appearances.
Paul Scaletta, who shared the second spot after the opening two rounds, slipped down to share the fourth position on the leaderboard, following his three-over par 75 on Tuesday.
Rod Perry was the other player to share the fourth spot with a two-under par three-round score.
