Matt Dobyns takes the biggest victory of his career at the PGA Professional National Championship
Matt Dobyns continued his great form in the PGA Professional National Championship and carded a two-under par 70 in the final round to register a record eight-stroke-margin victory at the Bayonet Black Horse Golf Course, on Wednesday, June 27, 2012.
Previously, the record was held by the 82-time PGA Tour winner Sam Snead, who recorded a five-stroke victory in 1971.
Dobyns looked pleased when he came to know that he broke the record set by one of the legends of the sport.
"This is the biggest tournament I've ever won," Dobyns said. "It'll probably be the biggest tournament I ever win. I'm trying to cherish every single second, but it's hard because everything is going so quickly. I don't know how that happened. To be mentioned
in the same breath with Sam Snead in any comparison is both humbling and exciting".
Throughout the tournament, he was the only player to break the par in each of the four rounds. He carded a total of three birdies and a bogey on day four to earn the biggest win of his career. His overall score was 13-under par 275 at the end of the tournament.
Apart from setting the highest margin record, he became the eighth player to succeed in his first appearance.
Before coming to participate in the event, he was very much concerned about the Ladies Member-Guest event, which was scheduled at his home club on Tuesday, June 26, 2012.
However, he was taken into confidence by his staff members that they will make good arrangements for the event and he may go for his debut appearance at Bayonet Black Horse.
Therefore, he thanked his team for having such confidence in him and taking care of each and everything at the Fresh Meadow Country Club in Lake Success, New York.
In the meantime, Kelly Mitchum and Rod Perry shared the second spot with scores of one-under par and three-under par, respectively. Both the players had a tournament score of five-under par 283.
Mike Small was further a stroke back to take the sole fourth position on the leaderboard. He had a final-round score of one-over par 73.
