Matt Dominguez shines as Florida Marlins defeat Detroit Tigers 9-5 – MLB Update
Third baseman Matt Dominguez hammered two home-runs to help Florida Marlins beat Detroit Tigers 9-5 in Grapefruit League Tuesday, March 8 at Joker Marchant Stadium. Florida.
Marlins added another victory to their 4-4 winning table making it 5-4. Tigers lost their fifth game in spring.
Detroit remained scoreless in first six innings but bounced back with two runs in the seventh. They tried hard but succeeded in making just five runs, not enough to beat Florida’s nine.
Despite Tigers’ right-handed pitcher Max Scherzer’s three strike-outs in just over three innings, Dominguez hit a huge home-run to achieve a psychological victory. However, Scherzer fulfilled the expectation of Detroit’s manager Jim Leyland who had praised
his abilities. Scherzer allowed five runs in eight hits in his third appearance, second start, of the spring. He finished sixth in the American League with 8.5 strike-outs per nine innings during the 2010 season.
"I just wasn't able to get it done," he said. "There were a lot of bloops, but I feel like I am where I need to be right now. I am working on some things but I will be ready soon. Something was just out of whack today."
Left-handed pitcher Charlie Furbush pitched in just over two innings striking-out two. He was accompanied with Joaquin Benoit, John Bale, Lester Oliveros and Robbie Weinhardt, all of which pitched in one inning each. Bale was the most expensive with his
three runs on four hits.
Florida’s batters put their best game as nine out of seventeen batters made single runs to accumulate nine on fifteen hits. Second baseman Bonifacio posted one run on one hit in three at-bats.
Tiger’s reliever Joel Zumaya is out of spring games due to soreness in right elbow. Dr. James Andrews in Birmingham examined Joel Zumaya, Monday because of lingering soreness in his right elbow and forearm since his first outing. Andrews did not see any
major structural damage and he recommended no throwing for Zumaya for at least another week, while emphasising treatment and strengthening exercises only.
Florida put in a tremendous effort as they managed to restrict the Tigers’ offence from scoring too many runs against their effective pitching line-up. The Tigers will be looking to improve their performance in their next match-up of the spring session.
Tigers will play their next game against Philadelphia Phillies Wednesday, March 9 with probable pitchers that include Rick Porcello, Adam Wilk and David Herridon, while in competition the Phillies have scheduled Joe Blanton, Ryan Madson and Justin De Fratus.
Marlins are heading towards Washington Nationals for their tenth game of Grapefruit League. Javier Vazquez will take on Jason Marquis.
