Matt Every fails to win the Valero Texas Open despite great performance in the first round - Golf News
Despite the record-breaking performance in the opening round of the Valero Texas Open, Matt Every failed to register the first ever PGA Tour victory of his career, following an average display of his game in the final three rounds.
Every started his campaign at the Oaks Course at San Antonio with a record-breaking nine-under par 63 on Thursday, April19, 2012.
However, he failed to maintain his momentum and carded 74 and 73 in the second and third round, which put him back on the leaderboard with a six-under par while entering the final round on Sunday.
He got off to a great start in the final round and carded four birdies on the first six holes to surge on the leaderboard positions.
However, a couple of bogeys on the back nine forced him to slip once again to share the second spot with John Huh.
Overall, the entire final round was fantastic to watch because of the see-saw game between the three players for the top position.
Ben Curtis, Huh and Every contended strongly and Curtis came out of the field as the champion for this year’s event.
"A little bummed out," Every said. "Kind of a pillow fight there for a while between the three of us".
Poor putting was the major reason for Every to face a defeat in the event, as he missed many chances, especially when he needed them badly.
"Been hearing that for about 15 years," Every said. "But I don't know, man. I mean they got to go in sometimes and it didn't today, but maybe it will one day. Saving for something bigger, maybe".
Huh, on the other hand, had the worst start he could expect in the tournament. He carded a five-over par 77 in the opening round on Thursday.
However, two back-to-back bogey-free rounds of 68 and 67 put him back into contention for the top position while entering the final round of the event.
Yet, he remained two strokes off the lead after carding a three-under par 69 on Sunday. "I didn't really expect too much, final round," Huh said.
Every will now participate in the Zurich Classic of New Orleans, scheduled to take place from April 26 to 29, 2012.
