Matt Flynn or Tarvaris Jackson as Seattle Seahawks starting QB? Competition is on, says Pete Carroll
Seattle Seahawks’ head coach, Pete Carroll, has said that the competition for the role of starting quarterback for next season is on and that either Matt Flynn or Tarvaris Jackson could be the starter.
Carroll made these remarks following the team’s workout on Friday, May 04, 2012. The head coach said:
“The competition is on, and I’m sure those guys are well informed about that and they understand that.”
Jackson was the team’s starter last season. He started his professional National Football League (NFL) season with Minnesota Vikings in 2006. He played five seasons for Vikings and joined the Seahawks last year.
Seahawks gave him the starting role, but he could not deliver his best shot.
On the other hand, Flynn started his professional NFL career with Green Bay Packers in 2008. He played four seasons with the Packs, but could not get the starting role. Seahawks selected him during the present offseason and he is now also looking to get
the starting role.
Seahawks also have two more quarterbacks on their roster. They include the recent draft pick, Russell Wilson, and Josh Portis, who joined the team last year.
However, it is widely believed that Flynn and Jackson will be competing against each other for the starting role and the other two will serve as their backup.
Both Flynn and Jackson are also aware of the competition and want to earn the starting role by proving their talent during the training camp and preseason games.
According to the details present on the team’s website, Flynn talked with media representatives on Friday and said of the competition and the quarterback situation:
“It’s different because I know I’m going to be competing and I know everything I do matters. In Green Bay, I kind of had the luxury of sitting back and learning and being able to take my time in the progression of becoming a better quarterback. Now I get
to come in here and compete and get the opportunity. That’s what I came here for, and that’s what I’m excited about.”
Jackson is also ready to compete. He said:
“I’m just here to compete like always and just see how things play out.”
