Matt Flynn to start again as Seattle Seahawks prepare to face Denver Broncos – NFL News
Seattle Seahawks head coach Pete Carroll has confirmed that quarterback Matt Flynn, who started their preseason opener against Tennessee Titans last Saturday, will start the next preseason game against Denver Broncos on next Saturday, August 18, 2012.
According to the details present on the team’s official website, the coach said:
“We’re going to start Matt and kind of keep the same format in this game as well as we did last week.”
Although the coach has not yet confirmed Flynn to be their starter in the regular season, receiving the opportunity to start for the second straight preseason game does point out that Flynn has bright prospects.
However, the other side of the picture must not be ignored. The Seahawks have maintained throughout the offseason that they would monitor the performance of their quarterbacks before deciding the starter.
Flynn has managed to beat Tarvaris Jackson and Russell Wilson, but that might not guarantee the starting role for the former Green Bay Packers quarterback.
“We thought that we gained a lot of information, but we need to see it come back again,” Carroll said of Flynn.
Seahawks are already aware of Jackson’s performance since he was their starter last season and now they want to collect as much information as possible on Flynn before announcing the starter.
Carroll said:
“We understand what kind of player Tarvaris is. He’s in great shape. He’s studied hard. He’s ready to go.”
He added:
“The emphasis right now is to get Matt and Russell their playtime again so we can really get another big body of knowledge and information from them.”
Against Titans, Wilson completed 12 out of 16 passes for 124 yards while scoring one touchdown and throwing one interception.
As for Flynn, he managed to complete 11 out of 13 passes for 71 yards. He also sent one interception.
The coach’s remarks clearly state that giving Flynn more opportunities does not imply that Jackson will not be considered for the starting role. However, this is an ideal opportunity for Flynn to prove his potential. If he is able to impress the coach during
the preseason games, he might as well get the starting role in the regular season.
