Matt Garza animates Chicago Cubs’ Spring Training – MLB News
If there is anything eye-catching and striking at Mesa, Arizona, it is Matt Garza’s yelling and cheering both on and off the mound. The Chicago Cubs’ had another bustling day on Wednesday, February 29 in the Spring Training camp.
This behaviour energises the whole atmosphere with excitement. The player who had his debut in 2006 has remained an inspirational figure for the youngsters and commands immense influence over the team-mates.
While he has a calm posture on the field, the training sessions have remained abuzz with his cheering and clapping.
"I hear him yelling," Cubs’ pitcher Ryan Dempster said. "I think it's awesome. I'm sure guys on the other team want to drill him or foul a ball off his forehead if they have that kind of bat control. He's just out there cheering for his teammates and wanting
them to do well."
Garza, on the other hand, says he was taught to be like that. The Cubs’ pitcher personifies animation and enthusiasm; something that leaves a deep impact on the whole atmosphere. With such energy and zeal pervading the milieu, Garza brings about the human
side of the game, away from fierce competition and professionalism.
"That's what it's all about -- it's about making a bond, friendship," he said. “Here, we're together for eight, nine [months], so if you can't make a friend and make a bond, you're not going to have a good time.”
While off the mound this player has cheered many a player, the Chicago Cubs’ fans want Garza to do everything possible to cheer them with success. Garza was reportedly being traded the past year, a rumour that was dismissed afterwards.
With his presence in the bullpen, the Cubs have reasons to be ever more confident. The past season saw Garza having 31 starts as a whole, winning 10 games and losing as many. He maintained a 1.26 WHIP with 3.32 ERA to his credit.
The career ERA stands at 3.83 in 152 games whereby he has won 52 games and lost 54 with a 1.30 WHIP; remaining the ALCS MVP in 2008.
