Matt Goss not happy with his Tour de France performance
Matt Goss of Team Orica GreenEdge came close to bag his first victory at the Tour de France during the stage 5 of the race.
He rode exceptionally well throughout the event but had to surrender ahead of the mighty Andre Greipel of Team Lotto Belisol.
The German completed the 196.5 kilometre race in a quickest time of 4 hours, 41 minutes and 30 seconds and secured the first overall position.
Juan Jose Haedo of Team Saxo Bank, Samuel Dumoulin of Team Cofidis and Mark Cavendish of Team Sky Procycling occupied the third, the fourth and the fifth positions respectively.
“I knew I was running out of legs, I don’t last forever unfortunately,” Goss said wistfully afterwards.
“We went full gas from the very bottom of the drag, but I knew that if my legs were running out then just about everyone else’s were running out too”.
“That was kind of why I jumped a little earlier because I thought everyone was tired”.
The Australian opened his 2012 winning account with a stage 1 victory at the Tirreno-Adriatico and also bagged a stage 3 win at the first Grand Tour race of the season, the Giro d’Italia 2012.
He also managed to secure the point’s classifications victory at the Tour of Turkey and was hopeful to take his performance to the next level at the Tour de France.
Goss finished third during the stage three of the race with Peter Sagan of Team Liquigas-Cannondale and Andre Greipel of Team Lotto Belisol occupying the first and the second positions.
The Australian currently holds the second overall position after the stage 6 point’s classifications with a total number of 178 UCI points in his back pocket.
Peter Sagan of Team Liquigas-Cannondale is leading the category with 209 UCI points while Andre Greipel of Team Lotto Belisol holds the third position with 167 UCI points.
Goss is currently holding the 59th overall position after the stage 6 general classifications and is now eyeing the coming stages of the Tour to improve his overall position.
Team Orica-GreenEdge is marking its Tour de France debut and has occupied the tenth overall position after the stage 6 classifications.
