Matt Grevers pockets Men’s 100 back-stroke gold: Day two – Mutual of Omaha Duel in the Pool
Matt Grevers of United States showed his urgency towards the finishing wall by pocketing gold medal of the Men’s 100m back-stroke on last day of the 2011 Mutual of Omaha Duel in the Pool in Atlanta on Saturday, December 17.
Just like the Women’s 200m freestyle, the American veterans secured the podium for top three positions. Grevers splendid efforts were challenged by his compatriots, Nick Thoman and Ryan Lochte but the 26-year-old managed to earn his way to the top of podium.
He had a splendid start, where his fastest under water kicks played a vital role in placing him ahead of his opponents. He ended his initial 50 metres of the race by submitting a top fastest time of 24.05 seconds.
He was trailed by his team-member, Thoman, who remained just 0.12 seconds slower than him in the first half and completed his round with a nice time of 24.17 seconds. Lochte remained just 0.08 seconds slower than Thoman and ended his first half of the race
with a third fastest time of 24.25 seconds.
Grevers continued his smothering efforts in the final round, where he shattered hopes of his challengers and ended his second half with a timing of 25.80 seconds to post 49.85 seconds on the board for gold medal.
The gold medallist remained nearly one second slower from improving the World and American mark of 48.94 seconds, set by Thoman during 2009.
He was followed by defending champion, Thoman, who failed to defend his title and ended his swim in a second place. He remained 0.28 seconds behind the gold medallist and secured the podium for silver medal by producing a second fastest time of 50.13 seconds.
Meanwhile, the arena sighted a laudable effort of Lochte, who remained 0.52 seconds slower than his former finisher and ended his swim with a timing of 50.65 seconds for bronze medal.
The arena acknowledged commendable efforts of Grevers, who outperformed defending champion of the event while the winners collected their accolades after the session. In addition, the championship concluded after the completion of all planned events in Men’s
and Women’s corner.
