Matt Griffin aims high at the NSW PGA Championship
After failing for the fourth time in a row at the second stage of the US PGA Tour Qualifying School, Matt Griffin now heads into this week’s NSW PGA Championship.
The tournament will be played at the Mt Broughton Golf and Country Club, and is sanctioned by the PGA Tour of Australasia.
The tournament is set to feature some of the prominent names, including the likes of Craig Parry, the OneAsia tour winner Nick Cullen and the winner of last week’s BMW NZ Open, Jake Higginbottom.
Griffin has now set his sights on finishing his 2012 campaign on a high note, by performing well in the remaining three tournaments left on the PGA Tour of Australasia roster.
He has already committed to participate in the final two events on the schedule, the Emirates Australian Open and the Australian PGA Championship Presented by Coca-Cola.
Talking to the reporters, he expressed his disappointment on missing out on the chance of another PGA Tour card for the 2013 season.
“So that’s now four years in a row failing at second stage. I’ve tried everything to get that week right but it has never happened,” said Griffin reflecting on his performance this week.
He added, “Golf is littered with stories of players failing a Q School but it’s hard to put a finger on why. Frustratingly I know my game is good enough to compete over in the US and I just need the opportunity”.
Earlier this season, Griffin won the OneAsia’s Charity High1 Resort Open, which earned him a total of AU$173,800 prize money.
The victory also helped him surge to the fourth position in the OneAsia Order of Merit. He now plans to keep the momentum going into the final two events left on the OneAsia roster, in a bid to finish the season on top of the money list.
If he succeeds in making it to the top of the Order of Merit, he will be allowed to participate in the final stage of the PGA Tour qualifying school.
“My goal now is to finish the year strong and win the OneAsia Order of Merit. If I can do that my Australian ranking will ensure I get to final stage,” he said.
