Matt Harvey makes Major League debut in style as he strikes out eleven - MLB Update
After all that was anticipated about the New York Mets' starting pitcher Matt Harvey at the eve of a Major League Debut by him, he inspires the fans in his first game in the season. As he struck-out eleven on Thursday, he has rightly lived up to the hype
which was made of his debut.
While the Mets were reluctant to bring him in the Majors earlier, they will be extremely satisfied now with the way Harvey threw and completed the spell of little more than five innings.
Harvey has been a consistent performer in the Minor League. Since the start of the season, he has been part of the discussions about when the Mets will introduce him in the Majors.
Although the team officials wanted to give Harvey more time in the Minors for maturing him, the circumstances compelled them for bringing the 23-year-old in the season.
The Mets saw their ace Johan Santana out on the disabled list due to an ankle injury. This made the club short of a pitcher who is one of their most reliable hurlers.
Along with Santana, another starting pitcher Dillon Gee had also been injured. It was almost certain that Gee will not be able to comeback in the season.
In light of these developments, the Mets had been left with little options on the rotation. Thus, the decision about Harvey was to be made.
As far as the comfort level of Harvey in the debut was concerned, he took his time to adjust to the pressure. Though he kept striking-out on a regular basis, he was a little under confident at the start. Even his manager Terry Collins stated later in the
game that he wants to see Harvey more comfortable in the upcoming matches.
Meanwhile, Harvey has talked about his outing on Thursday.
"When I was warming up I looked around and kind of took everything in," Harvey said. "At that moment I really did believe that I was meant to pitch in the big leagues. It was everything I could have imagined. I just wanted to do everything I could to keep
the team in a winning distance."
As Harvey was dominant on the mound, it will be interesting to see whether he can replicate the same performance in the games to come.
