Matt Harvey may earn the call to start on Saturday against Los Angeles Dodgers - MLB Update
After the New York Mets have been left with little options on rotation, all eyes now turn to a 23-year-old right handed prospect at Triple-A, Matt Harvey.
As per the reports, the Mets are not going to resist the temptation of calling him in the Majors, in the face of the fact that Dillon Gee and Mike Pelfrey have been injured and are highly likely to remain out until the end of the season.
Therefore, he may begin the proceedings from the mound on Saturday against the Los Angeles Dodgers.
Furthermore, with the second half of the season starting off on a negative note, the Mets are aware of the fact that if they cannot keep themselves afloat at this particular time, the chances for claiming the second spot on the table are dismal.
Therefore, someone who can counter balance the effect of injuries to their starters is in dire need.
Furthermore, New York deals with a bullpen which is prone to volatility. The fact Frank Francisco is injured and will take some time to return indicates that their bullpen will remain short of a quality reliever. Thus, a starter who can throw a maximum number
of scoreless innings from the start and can alleviate the burden on relievers is needed by the club.
Meanwhile, the tremendous success Harvey had at Minor League level can strengthen his contention for being brought to the Majors. He has been a consistent performer there. For the same reason, Mets’ manager Terry Collins considers him seriously for staring
on Saturday.
“Monday night we might get the reports back, ‘He’s the guy. He’s ready,’” Collins said.
Despite the fact the manager shows confidence in his ability, there are few high profile members in the organisation who still believe that it is not the right time to give Harvey the Major League call.
However, the fact Miguel Batista, a starting pitcher for the Mets, is struggling immensely on the mound makes Harvey a strong contender for being given the ball on Saturday.
For the next few days, Harvey is going to be scanned by the Mets’ team officials. In particular, his ability to throw fastballs on consistent basis will be one of their areas for observation. It will be interesting to note how Harvey can impress them now.
