Matt Harvey roughed up by San Diego Padres as he faces harsh realities in Major League – MLB News
It is easy to escape in the Minor League for a starter when he commits a mistake, but at the Major League level as soon as a single loose throw is released, the batters will latch on to it for a hit. What has happened with the New York Mets’ starting pitcher
Matt Harvey during the game against the San Diego Padres is not much different to it.
As Harvey has stated himself, the same mistake which cost him nothing in the Minor League caused his rough up in a Major League game.
Harvey is going through his first Major League season.
He was brought in the Majors reluctantly by the management. The team officials wanted Harvey to spend more time in the Minors and work out issues that can potentially plague his repertoire of skills.
However, certain events took place that made Harvey an only option to turn to for the officials. With the starting pitchers Dillon Gee and Johan Santana lost to injuries, calling him in the season became indispensable.
Harvey had a fantastic Major League debut. The way he struck-out batters in his first outing encouraged experts to believe that he will improve further in the upcoming games.
However, the home-runs and the massive hits he surrendered against the Padres can be demoralising for Harvey.
With confidence affected, bouncing back with a solid outing next time will be nothing short of a challenge for Harvey.
Meanwhile, Harvey explains what went wrong for him in the game. Not able to locate the right areas in the strike-zone, hitters found it easy to strike hits on his throws, he maintains.
“It was one of those days I couldn’t find the strike zone, and when I did it was not quality,” Harvey said. “I wasn’t executing the way I had the last two starts. When you make a mistake they are going to hit it. Down [in Triple-A] you can get away with
some stuff — not all the time — but more often than not up here you’re going to make a mistake and they’re going to hit it.”
Mets’ manager Terry Collins will be walking up to Harvey to make him feel confident for upcoming games. Collins will make sure Harvey does not take one bad show to heart. Instead, he will like to see Harvey learning from his mistakes.
