Matt Harvey struggles as New York Mets lose to St. Louis Cardinals 1-5 - MLB Update
Starter Matt Harvey records his fourth loss of the season as the New York Mets face a 1-5 defeat against the St. Louis Cardinals at Busch Stadium, St. Louis, Missouri on September 4, 2012 in the second match of the three game series.
Cardinals surged to a three run lead in the second. As New York put up little resistance on their way, they sailed to an easy victory.
Not just the batters but pitchers were equally impressive for the Cardinals.
Their starter Jaime Garcia threw little more than seven innings. While he struggled to control the batters from striking hits against him, he gave up just one run in the match. On the other hand Mets’ starter Harvey leaked runs and that actually became the
difference in both the teams in the end.
By the time Garcia left and relievers stepped on the mound, New York had the opportunity to score some runs and bounce back. However against the relief pitchers they turned out to be even worse as they failed to strike even a single hit off their pitches.
Shortstop Ruben Tejada, third baseman David Wright and right fielder Scott Hairston were some of the batters that brought hits in the match for New York. However since those hits were not utilised to the maximum as not even a single run was scored from them,
they did little to eschew the failure of the team.
Harvey takes a heavy swipe of himself after the match acknowledging he did not draw strike-outs in the beginning. Instead of throwing a reasonable number of innings he left the mound early leaving the bulk of the work for the relievers.
"I'm not happy about it," Harvey said. "I've got to go out there, go deeper in the game. I've got to get quicker outs, keep the pitch counts down, and I didn't do that tonight. I should have been better."
Mets’ manager Terry Collins asserts against a side which possesses great hitters the kind of throws Harvey hurled at them were bound to go for the distance.
"He hung a couple of breaking balls up," Collins said. "They spray it around. They're a good-hitting club."
The Mets are struggling immensely as far as their offence is concerned. Their improvements in this area will decide largely as to what they end up achieving in the next game.
