Matt Harvey’s bid to substantiate his Big League credentials goes in vain - MLB Update
In a bid to prove his Big League credentials, Matt Harvey started out on the mound for New York Mets against Washington Nationals. Never had he thought how brutally his plans are going to be ruined.
Whacked for three homers in the start, he will never find his rhythm back. While scheduled to throw 90 pitches, his first inning lengthened to such an extent that he was to be called back immediately.
Questions were raised after the game as to why Dillon Gee, another starter for Mets, was not included. Later it came out that management on-purpose held him as he is scheduled to play against Nationals in his first regular season outing. Therefore, the idea
was to save him from being exposed to Nationals’ batters who may have spotted his loopholes if allowed to face them.
However in light of the fact that the Mets are going through a terrible time during Spring Training and winning the match was extremely important for them, the presence of Gee will have influenced the outcome of today’s game in many ways.
Harvey will see his confidence dented badly and since team officials’ hopes slipped away who already were apprehensive of his contention for Major League, he will look to prove them wrong by recovering immediately.
Still manager Terry Collins reposed confidence in Harvey, saying that it is just a matter of time when he regains his best and actually turns out as big a prospect for side as he has been touted earlier.
“Hopefully next time we see [Harvey] he will be a lot better,” manager Terry Collins said. “He’s closer to the major leagues than what he showed today. It was just a [lousy] day.”
Closer look at his today’s’ performance indicates that his arm movements and throws were spot on, only area he was let down by on the mound was his inability to bend his throws down.
“My body felt great, my arm felt great, it was just a matter of getting the ball down and throwing my pitches, and I wasn’t able to do that,” Harvey said.
His today’s performance may have underwhelmed his chances to taste Big League experience in the season. He is very talented and will be looking to come back to the big stage with a much better performance. After all he is still very young and has yet to
learn many new things.
