Matt Harvey’s poor performance in Triple-A Buffalo will not affect his Major League debut – MLB
The New York Mets’ top Minor League prospect the starting pitcher Matt Harvey will make his Major League debut on Thursday against the Arizona Diamondbacks. In this respect, as he played for Triple-A Buffalo, his performance was not impressive. This, therefore,
can be concerning for the Mets’ management as they assign him an important responsibility in the Major League.
Harvey’s inclusion in the rotation has come at a time when New York sees their ace Johan Santana and another starting pitcher, Dillon Gee languishing on the disabled list. This means that in order to fill the void of their absence, Harvey will be showing
command and consistent performances on the mound.
However, since the 23-year-old appears for the first time in the Majors, he will be under pressure.
It is more so in light of the fact that New York has been putting up dismal performances for the last few weeks. Therefore, he will be conscious of the fact that in case he witnesses little support from the offence, even a better start from his part will
be ruined.
Meanwhile, on being questioned about Matt’s ability to withstand the Major League pressure and come out as strong as the club have expected, Mets’ manager Terry Collins is confident that he can meet the requirements. He downplays the poor start by him in
a Minor League outing and is looking forward to solid shows from him in the season.
“Matt pitched [Saturday], didn’t pitch very good but he has been pitching good,” said Collins. “one of those situations, Wally [Backman, the Buffalo manager] thought, where his mind was in New York and not necessarily in Buffalo, which I totally understand
completely. … You’ve got to throw those starts out. Part of the whole thing is being here in New York where everything’s a story.”
Regardless of what happened in the game, Harvey will be excited about his first appearance in the season. Certainly, he is going to experience one of the most prestigious moments of his life.
Ideally, he will like to become a saviour for the club as they desperately need one at the moment.
