Matt Hasselbeck vs Jake Locker: Tennessee Titans on wait and see about QB competition – NFL News
Tennessee Titans’ coach Mike Munchak says he is not done with the starting quarterback competition between the incumbent Matt Hasselbeck and Jake Locker yet but hopes they should be able to know the offence leader by middle of the preseason campaign next
month.
Both players have been given the opportunity to take the starting snaps on a rotation basis and the process appears set to continue until after training camp.
Mike said:
"I think we have no choice but to. We can't wait past that. I mean in any position, again just philosophy wise, you got to do what's best for your team and you got to make a decision."
He added:
"You're kind of taking it all in on the field. You can see things on the field obviously you cannot see on film. That's the type of stuff the interactions, how they respond to each other, how they respond after maybe a couple of bad plays, how they take
the coaching."
The talk of the competition was triggered by a rare opportunity to Locker to play into role of Matt while he was on the sidelines with an injury in the 2011 National Football League (NFL) season.
After Jake impressed the coach and onlookers during his first appearance as an offence leader, a question immediately emerged who among the two will be the starter of the team. The coach managed to handle the situation well by leaving the role to its original
performer (Matt) but this did not help the controversy die down.
The question resurfaced this offseason and since then is gaining prominence among the Titans circles. The coach admitted to have often been asked if Locker will be given the starting role.
To play fair, the team has left the position for a competition between the two players, and after showing off their respective skills in other offseason workout sessions both players are now in front of each other at training camp. Jake has challenged Matt’s
position while the incumbent says he is determined to fight until the end of the competition.
Apparently, the players have no favours from any side and winning of the role depends down to their skills and performance.
