Matt Hendrix leads Web.com Tour’s Price Cutter Charity Championship
Matt Hendrix carded a superb nine-under par round of 63 to race into the lead through the opening day at the Web.com Tour’s Price Cutter Charity Championship.
The American opened with a par after teeing off on the 10th, before picking up his first shot at the par-five 11th. He followed that up with two more birdies on the 12th and 13th, then parred each of the remaining five holes on the back nine.
His front-nine performance was even better, as he managed to record four birdies added with an amazing eagle on his way to take a one-stroke lead over James Nitties and Doug Barron.
It was a great start for the 31-year-old South Carolina resident, especially after missing the cuts in three of the last five Web.com Tour starts that he made.
Apart from that, he failed to make it to the final two rounds in 10 of the 15 tournaments that he has played so far during the 2012 season. Therefore, he seemed really happy after his error-free performance at the Highland Springs Country Club.
According to him, his putter played the key role in going low. He now plans to repeat the same performance in the upcoming rounds and take the title home for the first time in 2012.
"The hole never looks bigger than it actually is, but when I'm putting well like today, at times it doesn't matter what line I choose, I know they're both right," Hendrix stated.
"It's always been good, but never overly great and today was great. Out here with weeks like this, you've got to go full throttle. You've got to aim at every pin".
Meanwhile, Barron also recorded a bogey-free round. However, he drained only eight birdies against Hendrix’s seven birdies and an eagle.
Still, it was an impressive display of the game by the American. He believes that the opening round score does not matter that much if not complemented by good scores in the remaining rounds.
"You might have to go low four days, especially the way these kids play. You just get on a roll," Barron said. "You have to be patient and you hope you get two or three in a row here and two or three in a row there".
