Matt Holliday sparks as St. Louis Cardinals rout Pittsburgh Pirates 8-4 - MLB Update
St. Louis Cardinals’ left-fielder, Matt Holliday had a tremendous day with his bat as he hit one home-run including three RBIs and went 1-for-5 with an average of .307 in the Cardinals’ 8-4 win against the Pittsburgh Pirates at Busch Stadium, St. Louis on
August 25.
Cardinals started extremely well as they took two runs at the bottom of first inning to get a 2-0 lead. Allen Craig posted the first run for Cardinals when Albert Pujols drove a double-run shot to deep left-field. The second run was taken by Pujols when
Lance Berkman singled towards right-field and then moved to second base on the throwing error.
In the second inning, Cardinals led off with 3-0 when Skip Schumaker bunted a single-run drive to centre-field and Rafael Furcal scored one run. On the other side, Pirates smashed three runs to tie the game 3-3, at the top of third inning.
Alex Presley hit a single-run shot to centre-field and Michael McKenry added the first run for Pirates. The second and third runs were taken by Andrew McCutchen and Presley when Garrett Jones bunted a single-run drive to centre-field. Neil Walker occupied
third base to end the third inning. Then, Pirates went ahead 4-3 by taking one run during fourth inning.
Ronny Cedeno scored a single run at the top of fourth inning when McKenry doubled to deep left-field. In the fifth inning, Cardinals got a 5-4 lead by posting two runs on their individual score-card. David Freese hit a single-run drive to right-field while
Craig and Pujols both contributed two collective runs for Cardinals. Later on, Berkman advanced to second base to end the fifth inning.
During sixth and seventh inning, the Cardinals remained on top as these innings passed score-less due to outstanding throws of the pitchers. Cardinals’ starter, Edwin Jackson pitched his six innings with an ERA of 3.99 and permitted four runs, six hits and
three walks. He struck-out two batters and gave up only one walk on his 106 pitches.
Cardinals further raised their lead 8-4 at the bottom of eighth inning when Holliday struck a three-run homer (395 feet) towards left-field while Jon Jay and Pujols added the last two runs.
However, Cardinals raised their potential and earned a 1-0 lead in the four-game series played at St. Louis.
